Great Homemade Teriyaki Sauce
Most teriyaki has garlic as a main flavor and I am allergic so I make my own! I love the flavor of sesame, ginger and soy together. Add a little sweet and spicy and it hits all of the flavor points to make any taste buds happy. This sauce is so easy to make and great for anything you want to grill this summer. I will be using it to baste veggie kabobs here. You can use it any way you use prepared teriyaki as a marinade for chicken or pork or in stir fried veggies. It really shines on the grill where the heat caramelizes the sugars in the sauce to make whatever you’re cooking beautiful golden brown.
Great Homemade Teriyaki Sauce
Fresh ginger and sesame oil stand out for this stellar teriyaki sauce that you will use like ketchup.
Ingredients
- 1 cup low sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger I keep mine cut unpeeled in 2 inch pieces in the freezer and grate it frozen right into the pan.
- 2 tsp toasted sesame oil
- 11/3 cup white wine or mirin
- 1 1/2 tbsp corn starch
- 1 cup warm water to mix with corn starch to make a slurry
- 1 tbsp sambal olek add more if you like it hot!
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Stir occasionally. Reduce heat and let bubble for another 15-20 minutes or until thickened. It should stick to the back of a spoon. If it doesn’t get as thick as desired add more of the corn starch slurry, if it gets too thick add more water. Use as a marinade or sauce for grilling.
